#04 Entry for UOB Painting of the Year 2021

Untitled Painting (2021)
Watercolor, graphite, color pencils on paper.

Illustrations of things I saw during the summer holiday, as well as things that I associate with Singapore. I simply wanted to record the things that I saw in my day-to-day life and appreciate the mundane things. When we were young, everything is exciting and new, and it feels like with each discovery the world becomes a little bit bigger. I wanted to practice that sense appreciation even now, and I hope future me does too.

The composition of this painting was not planned, I just drew each subject as I go. And finally I kind of saw it as a map that you would see in an adventure story, so I connected them with a “trail”. I wanted to be more subtle at the time, but I think I might revisit this painting in the future to make it more map-like. A painting never can be “finished” can it.

I submitted this painting to the competition but sadly did not pass through. It was a pretty good journey and lesson though. When I look back on this painting I can recollect that time in my life. I wonder what emotion future me would have when he looks at this. I’m sure it’s going to be different than “now” me.
