#05 The Bells

The Bells (2020)
Xylene image transfer over pencil & ballpoint pen, on 200gsm  toned paper.

Illustration depicting the bells inside St.Andrew’s Cathedral.

This was done for a school project, where we had to pick a location as a subject for our final piece. I decided on the St.Andrews Cathedral because it caught my interest during my trips to the city area.

    Process (sketchbook snippets)

The process itself was very fun for me. One of the tasks or prompts given, was to capture textures of our chosen space by using frottage (penciling on paper). That gave me an excuse and courage to go inside. Before this, I’ve never stepped foot inside a church before.

I also attended a service, so I can experience what it’s like.
It was also an attempt to understand a part of Christianity more, since that was my at-the-time crush’s religion.

I tried to be respectful and follow what the other people were doing. I didn’t dare to pull out the camera to capture the interior.
I try not to do that in places of worship. So I sketched it out sneakily instead.

I didn’t really get to see the bells on my trip there, which was expected. The visuals are a result of using images online as reference.

    Composition Tests

I wanted to depict the 8 bells, that were name after the Apostles. I thought that was an interesting point, it’s like each bell has its own personality or quirks. I tried to show that in the final piece. To finish the piece, I decided to add a photo I took of the building, and transfer that image on top.
